There is no single national signature-size rule in India. Instead, two broad conventions have emerged, and almost every form you will ever fill out falls into one of them.

Government exam and recruitment forms (SSC, RRB, UPSC, IBPS, state PSCs, GATE, CUET, NEET, bank PO and clerk exams, and most others) converge on a shared convention: sign within a 6cm by 2cm box, resize to roughly 140x60 pixels, and compress to between 10KB and 20KB, saved as a JPEG. It is not a single official standard so much as a figure nearly every recruitment board independently settled on, so it is worth a quick check against your own notification, but it is the safest default if you are unsure.

PAN card applications use a different, larger format entirely, and the two PAN-issuing agencies do not even agree with each other. NSDL (now Protean) wants roughly 157x354px at 10 to 50KB, while UTIITSL wants exactly 400x200px under 60KB. Both are covered as separate presets above.

If your form falls outside either of these, use the Custom size option, enter the exact pixel dimensions and KB limit from your notification, and crop to that instead of guessing.

If you are filling out an SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS, GD, or JE form, an RRB NTPC or Group D application, a UPSC civil services or other UPSC recruitment form, an IBPS PO or clerk application, a state PSC form like TNPSC or Kerala PSC, or sitting for GATE, CUET, or NEET, the signature spec you are looking for is almost certainly the same one: signed within 6cm by 2cm, resized to about 140x60 pixels, JPEG, 10 to 20KB. Bank exams, including SBI PO and SBI clerk, and state recruitment drives like UP Police, generally follow suit, sometimes with a slightly looser 40KB ceiling.

This convention became so widespread that most resizer tools online, including this one, default to it whenever a form simply says "signature, JPEG, under 20KB" without spelling out exact pixels. It is worth a quick check against your specific notification PDF before you submit, recruitment boards do occasionally publish a different figure for a particular cycle, but treat 140x60px at 10 to 20KB as the safe starting point across nearly all of these exams.

A PAN card application is the one common exception to the exam-form convention above. NSDL (Protean) and UTIITSL each run their own portal with their own signature spec, neither matching the 140x60px exam convention, and the two don't even match each other. NSDL wants a signature around 157x354px, 10 to 50KB, while UTIITSL wants exactly 400x200px, under 60KB. Pick the matching preset above rather than the general exam option if you are applying for a PAN card. Sign in black or dark blue ink on plain white, unruled paper. A phone photo works just as well as a scanner, as long as the paper lies flat, is evenly lit with no shadow falling across the ink, and is photographed straight-on rather than at an angle. If the photo comes out sideways, a common issue with phone camera apps depending on how you held the phone, use the rotate buttons above the crop box to straighten it before dragging and zooming.

Once it's loaded, crop tightly to the ink itself, leaving as little white border as you comfortably can. Most rejections at this step aren't about ink colour or paper, they come from a signature that technically fits the file-size limit but looks tiny and unclear inside a large white frame once it has been shrunk down to 140x60 pixels.
