Unlike Canada, the Australian Passport Office doesn't require a commercial photographer, a self-taken photo is fine as long as it meets the spec. What it does require, for paper applications, is a guarantor's signature on one printed photo. It's worth knowing the physical size matches the UK exactly, 35×45mm either way, though the accepted head-height range is slightly different (32 to 36mm here versus 29 to 34mm for the UK). The US and India both use a 2×2in square instead, and Canada uses a taller 50×70mm rectangle. None of these are interchangeable, so double-check you're cropping against the right country's spec before you print or upload anything.
Can you take your own Australian passport photo?
